THE OPIUM STORY IN
CAMBODIA |
|
Opium was a commodity
of economic importance and monopoly of the Cambodia monarch by the
time the France signed the commercial and religious convention
between France and Cambodia in 1857. During this time the Cambodian
sovereign was anxious to maintain this source of revenue. Khmer
society did not much favour opium use and its use was confined to
the Chinese business community and foreigners. Descriptive accounts
were written from the latter part of the 19th century on opium dens
and the ritual of opium use in Phnom Penh. Scattered accounts exist
of the opium smoking independence from France and up until the Lon
period during the 1970s. During the Khmer Rouge ascendancy opium use
was eradicated. The returning use of opium in probably marked
by the Vietnamese invasion and the succeeding period of the United
Transitional Authority in Cambodia, |
